Yardbird's Nest

Of Ornithology, Contrafact, and Contrafiction

A conceptual nest for Charlie “Yardbird” Parker using the alto saxophone as a form generator.  The saxophone was documented with a series of sectional drawings, both transverse and longitudinal, which then became a set of drawings used to create something entirely new.  This project drew heavily on Parker’s concept of “contrafact” in which a new melody is laid over an existing harmonic structure.   It was also an attempt to express the improvisational nature of Parker’s music in collage-like forms, subverting the sinuous curves of the original object.
